Why timing matters more than the test itself
After exposure to HIV, there's a stretch of time before a test can reliably detect infection — this is the window period. Test too early, inside that gap, and a negative result may simply mean the infection hasn't produced enough antibodies or antigen yet to register, not that it isn't there.
Older antibody-only tests wait for the immune system to build a detectable antibody response, which takes longer. A 4th generation combo test also checks for antigen, which can appear before antibodies do, so it can flag an infection sooner than an antibody-only method covering the same exposure.
Our Basic 4 panel — which screens HIV alongside three other targets — is published as best taken 28 days after exposure for maximum confidence. If you tested earlier and are still concerned, the responsible move is a follow-up test at or after that mark rather than treating an early result as final.
Unlike the antibody/antigen combo test, RNA PCR looks for the virus's genetic material directly, so it does not wait for an immune response — the option for early detection ahead of the 28-day mark, at additional cost.
